The tallest of the tall

The world's tallest statue is a 394ft bronze figure of Buddha in Tokyo, which was completed in January 1993. It is 115ft wide and weighs 1,000 tonnes.

 

The longest statue is the remains of the recumbent Sakya Buddha, near Bamiyan in Afghanistan. Built in the 3rd or 4th century AD of plastered rubble, it is 1,000ft long.

Britain's tallest statue, the Angel of the North, a steel figure modelled on the body of its sculptor, Antony Gormley. It dominates the A1 at Gateshead, Tyneside, and is 65ft tall.

The Statue of Liberty in New York stands at 302ft tall, including its pedestal. The figure is 151ft to the tip of the torch.

The statue of Christ the Redeemer on the summit of Mt Corcovado, 2,400 ft above sea level in Rio de Janeiro, is 120ft tall. It was completed in 1931 to mark the centenary of Brazilian independence.
